History
Earl Grey is named after Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey and British Prime Minister (1830-1834). Legend has it he received the recipe as thanks for saving the son of a Chinese mandarin. The truth is probably more prosaic, but the magic remains: black tea, refined with the essential oil of bergamot – a citrus fruit from Calabria, Italy.
Taste Experience
Elegant and aromatic – Earl Grey is the gentleman among teas. The bergamot unfolds first with citrus-floral notes, followed by the malty body of black tea. A hint of lavender and sunflowers lingers.
Fun Fact
Bergamot is grown almost exclusively in Calabria, the "toe tip" of Italy. 90% of world production comes from there – the only place where climate and soil are perfect for this delicate citrus fruit.
