History
The Tote Tante (Dead Aunt), also known as Pharisee, is a North German classic from the 19th century. Legend has it that the Frisians invented this drink to deceive their pastor – the rum was hidden under the cream. When the pastor discovered the trick, he exclaimed: "Oh, you Pharisees!" The name Tote Tante came later and refers to its intoxicating effect.
Taste Experience
A drink full of contrasts and history. The cold cream hides the warmth of coffee and rum. With each sip drunk through the cream, more of the sweet-bitter, rum-warmed mixture below reveals itself. North German coziness in a cup.
Fun Fact
In North Frisia, there are strict rules: The cream may NEVER be stirred! Anyone who stirs it must buy a round for everyone present. This tradition is still strictly observed in Frisian restaurants today.
