The Story

The Tote Tante (Dead Aunt), also known as Pharisee, is a North German classic from the 19th century. Legend has it that the Frisians invented this drink to deceive their pastor – the rum was hidden under the cream. When the pastor discovered the trick, he exclaimed: "Oh, you Pharisees!" The name Tote Tante came later and refers to its intoxicating effect.

The Experience
"A drink full of contrasts and history. The cold cream hides the warmth of coffee and rum. With each sip drunk through the cream, more of the sweet-bitter, rum-warmed mixture below reveals itself. North German coziness in a cup."

Did You Know?

In North Frisia, there are strict rules: The cream may NEVER be stirred! Anyone who stirs it must buy a round for everyone present. This tradition is still strictly observed in Frisian restaurants today.
